An Illustrative Scenario: A Trader and the Year-End Tax Surprise

26 October 2026·CA Vatsal Upadhyay

A note before we begin

This is a fictional scenario written to illustrate a common pattern. It does not describe a real client, and the details are invented for the purpose of explanation.

The situation

Imagine a trader running a growing business. Sales have been good all year, money keeps moving through the account, and the owner assumes that tax is a matter for the accountant to deal with after the year ends.

What happens

When the accounts are finalised, profit turns out to be much higher than the owner expected. Because no tax was planned for during the year, a large amount is due at once, at a time when the cash has already been used to restock and expand.

Why it happens

The owner judged the year by the balance in the bank, not by profit. Cash on hand and profit earned are different things, and nobody reviewed the numbers during the year, when there was still room to act.

What would have changed the outcome

A short review every quarter would have shown the profit building up. Setting money aside as it was earned, and discussing larger purchases before making them, would have turned a surprise into a planned payment.

The lesson

A tax surprise is usually not caused by the tax itself. It is caused by learning the numbers too late. The earlier a business looks at its real position, the more choices it still has.

Next step

If you have never compared your profit with the cash in your account during the year, do it for the most recent quarter. The gap between the two is what a planning conversation is meant to address.
